Resin Bound Driveway | Rayleigh

About the Project:

The primary goal of this project was to replace an existing, likely outdated or worn, driveway with a modern, durable, and aesthetically pleasing alternative. The key objectives were:

  • To significantly enhance the property’s kerb appeal.
  • To provide a hard-wearing, low maintenance surface suitable for vehicle and foot traffic.
  • To ensure proper drainage with a permeable surface.
  • To create a clean, defined finish using contrasting block paving as an edge restraint.

Project Steps:

  1. Site Preparation & Excavation
    • The existing driveway surface was completely removed.
    • The area was excavated to the required depth to create a solid foundation.
    • Any necessary ground levelling and checks for underlying services were completed.
  2. Sub-Base Installation
    • A new sub-base, consisting of MOT Type 1 aggregate, was laid down.
    • This layer was thoroughly compacted using a wacker plate to create a stable and solid foundation, crucial for preventing future subsidence.
  3. Edging & Drainage Installation
    • The dark grey block pavers were installed around the perimeter of the driveway and pathways. These were set in concrete to provide a robust and permanent edge restraint that holds the resin surface in place.
    • A new linear drainage channel was installed against the house to effectively manage surface water runoff, protecting the building’s foundation.
  4. Laying the Porous Base Course
    • A layer of open-grade porous tarmac was laid over the compacted sub-base. This creates a strong, permeable layer that allows water to drain through freely, preventing puddles and complying with SUDs regulations.
  5. Resin Bound Application
    • The chosen aggregate and the clear polyurethane resin were carefully mixed together in a specialised forced-action mixer to ensure every stone was fully coated.
    • The mixture was then poured onto the tarmac base and expertly hand-trowelled to a smooth, level finish at a consistent depth. This is a skilled process that ensures a seamless and even surface across the entire area.
  6. Curing
    • The new surface was cordoned off to allow it to cure undisturbed. The curing time can vary depending on temperature and weather conditions, but it is typically ready for foot traffic in 6-8 hours and vehicle traffic within 24-48 hours.

Finished Result:

The project has been completed successfully, resulting in a flawless, high-performance driveway. The finished surface is not only visually striking but also offers numerous practical benefits:

  • Durability: It is resistant to weeds, frost and UV degradation.
  • Low Maintenance: The surface requires minimal upkeep, just occasional sweeping and jet washing.
  • Permeability: The fully permeable system prevents standing water and reduces flood risk.
  • Aesthetics: The seamless finish and defined edges have significantly improved the property’s overall appearance and likely added to its value.
