Block Paved Driveway | Southend

About the Project:

The existing driveway was dated, uneven, and visually cluttered, detracting from the property’s appearance. The aim of this project was to completely overhaul the entrance, creating a clean, modern, and highly functional space. Key objectives included:

  • To maximise usable parking space.
  • To create a visually appealing design that complements the house.
  • To integrate the existing central shrub into a deliberate, low-maintenance garden feature.
  • To use high-quality, durable materials for a long-lasting finish.

Project Steps:

  1. Site Clearance & Demolition
    • The entire existing concrete and paved surface was broken up and removed from the site.
    • The old brick retaining wall was carefully demolished and cleared away to open up the space.
  2. Excavation & Sub-Base Installation
    • The area was excavated to the correct depth to accommodate the new layers.
    • A geo-textile membrane was laid down to prevent the sub-base from mixing with the soil below and to inhibit weed growth.
    • A substantial layer of MOT Type 1 aggregate was installed and compacted with a heavy-duty wacker plate to form a solid, load-bearing foundation.
  3. Edge Restraints & Feature Definition
    • The darker block pavers were used to create a solid, permanent edge restraint around the perimeter of the driveway and the central garden feature. These were set into a concrete base to ensure they remain fixed in place.
  4. Laying Course & Block Paving
    • A layer of sharp sand was spread over the compacted sub-base and screeded to create a perfectly level and smooth bed for the pavers.
    • The main charcoal-coloured block pavers were then laid by hand in the desired pattern across the designated areas.
  5. Finishing Touches
    • A weed-control membrane was placed in the central feature area before it was filled with the contrasting light-coloured decorative gravel.
    • Kiln-dried jointing sand was brushed meticulously into all the gaps between the block pavers.
    • Finally, the entire paved surface was compacted once more with the wacker plate, which locks the blocks tightly together and ensures a solid, even finish.

Finished Result:

This project has successfully transformed the front of the Southend property. The result is a stunning, high-quality driveway that is both practical and aesthetically pleasing. The clever design, which combines traditional block paving with modern decorative aggregates, creates a unique and high-end look. The homeowners now benefit from:

  • Enhanced Curb Appeal: The property’s appearance is vastly improved.
  • Increased Functionality: The driveway provides more organised and accessible parking.
  • Low Maintenance: The new surface is easy to care for and durable.
  • Added Value: A professionally installed driveway is a significant asset to any home.
